Vol. 561 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Pat Breen

Question:

272 Mr. P. Breen asked the Minister for Education and Science the pupil ratio for 2003-04; if there will be a change for national schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3484/03]

The pupil teacher ratio at primary level has improved significantly in recent years. The ratio has fallen from 22.2:1 in 1996/97 to 19.0:1 in the 2001/2 school year. The projected ratio for the current school year is 18.4:1.

The mainstream staffing of a primary school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on the 30 September of the previous school year. The number of mainstream teaching posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule which is finalised for a particular school year following discussions with the education partners.

The staffing schedule for 2003-4 school year will issue shortly to the boards of management of all primary schools and will also be posted on my Department's website.
