Vol. 561 No. 1

Written Answers. - Third Level Charges.

Jack Wall

Question:

298 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department carried out surveys in regard to living costs for students at third level institutions; if not, if it is his intention to have such surveys carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3706/03]

My Department has not carried out research into the cost of maintaining a student at a third level institution. Data collated in respect of the student survey conducted in 2000 on behalf of the Higher Education Authority, however, indicates that the average monthly expenditure, excluding tobacco, alcohol and entertainment, incurred by a student residing at home was €196, and €433 for those living away from home. My Department is conducting a review of student support provisions aimed at ensuring that the benefits of the substantial investment being made are maximised. This review will cover a broad range of topics relating to the schemes of student support including the level of maintenance grants, eligibility, income limits with respect to the grants, the free fees initiative and will consider various options taking into account international experiences in this field.
