Vol. 561 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Seamus Healy

Question:

470 Mr. Healy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he intends to approve the application by the Garda superintendent and the RAPID programme, for the appointment of community gardaí for Clonmel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3543/03]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources to areas. The allocation of gardaí to particular duties within a division is the responsibility of the divisional officer.

The current personnel strength of Clonmel Garda station is 39, all ranks. The current personnel strength of Tipperary Garda division is 315, an increase of 18 or 6% since 31 December 1997.

Resources in Clonmel are augmented from within the district/division as required. The area is also patrolled by the divisional traffic unit.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that the situation will be kept under review and when additional personnel next become available the needs of Clonmel will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda stations throughout the country.
