Vol. 561 No. 1

Written Answers. - Accident and Emergency Services.

Denis Naughten

Question:

158 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children the impact which the withdrawal of recognition for accident and emergency departments will have on the County Hospital, Roscommon; the future of its accident and emergency department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3295/03]

In June, 2002, the Irish surgical postgraduate training committee, ISPTC, of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, RCSI, published guidelines for the recognition of training posts in accident and emergency departments of acute hospitals providing such services.

The provision of medical services at Roscommon County Hospital is the responsibility of the Western Health Board in the first instance. I understand from the Western Health Board that discussions have taken place with the RSCI regarding these guidelines and their application at Roscommon County Hospital. The board is confident that satisfactory arrangements will be agreed with the college for the ongoing delivery of accident and emergency services at Roscommon.
