Vol. 561 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Inspectorate.

Paul McGrath

Question:

303 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he expects the Garda inspectorate to come into existence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3836/03]

The Programme for Government contains a commitment to establish an independent Garda inspectorate, which would have the power to investigate complaints and which would also have the powers of an ombudsman. Work on the preparation of a general scheme of a Bill to provide for this is well advanced, and I intend bringing this to Government in the near future with a view to publication later this year. I would hope for early enactment by the Oireachtas and every effort will thereafter be made to establish the inspectorate as quickly as possible.
