Vol. 561 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

David Stanton

Question:

132 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the professional assessment received by his Department on the condition of the Christian Brothers second level school in Youghal and the building occupied by Coláiste Eoin in Youghal; the reason he removed the community school project for Youghal from the list in section four projects which was to go ahead in 2003; when he expects the project to go ahead; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4235/03]

The 2003 capital programme has been published and full details in relation to individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. In the light of contractual commitments carried over from 2002 it was only possible to allow 14 major projects to proceed to construction in 2003. The proposed new community school at Youghal, County Cork is at an advanced stage of architectural planning – pre-tender stage – and is listed on section 6 of the capital programme. When the new school project at Youghal can progress to tender and construction is dependent on the funding allocation in 2004 and subsequent years. In the meantime, the building unit of my Department has funded essential repairs to the roofs of the existing schools. Funding has also been allocated in the 2003 capital programme for essential improvement works to the mechanical and electrical systems to allay any health and safety concerns. This work will be carried out as soon as possible.
