Question:

172 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the further consideration which is being given to the refugee status application of a person (details supplied) in view of the deteriorating political situation in the Ivory Coast. [4190/03]

The decision in relation to this application for asylum issued on 11 February. The decision letter set out the options open to the person in question.

173 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the review of asylum seeker procedures in his Department which is likely after the false imprisonment in Cork in January of a person (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4191/03]

I am informed that the person in question is not an applicant for asylum.

I have asked the section of my Department with responsibility for immigration and residence matters to furnish me with a comprehensive report on the incident referred to by the Deputy.

174 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of former or current asylum seekers, since 1992, who have applied to remain in the State based on parentage of an Irish born child. [4250/03]

As many as 12,779 applications of the type referred to by the Deputy were received from former or current asylum seekers during the period 1 January 2001 to 31 January 2003. There are no statistics available prior to 2001.

175 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of former or current asylum seekers, since 1992, who have not received a definite response to their application to remain in the State based on parentage of an Irish born child. [4251/03]

As at 31 January the number of current or former asylum seekers who have not received a definite response to their application for permission to remain in the State based on parentage of an Irish born child is 9,391.
