Vol. 561 No. 3

Written Answers. - Food Industry.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

19 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the action he proposes to take on foot of a recent report on food labelling compiled for his Department which called for the prohibition of misleading or ambiguous food labels; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3861/03]

My Department is currently examining the report of the food labelling group which was presented to me in December. Following this examination, I shall decide on how best to progress the implementation of the recommendations contained in the report. The report contains 21 broad ranging recommendations, most of which will need further consultation with the European Commission, other Departments and agencies. The European Commission has also initiated consultation with member states as part of its current review of food labelling legislation. This report of the food labelling group will form the basis of Ireland's input into this process.
