Vol. 561 No. 3

Written Answers. - Food Safety Standards.

Dan Boyle

Question:

77 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the pesticides for which a maximum residue level on food has been established; and the pesticides for which a maximum residue level on food has yet to be established. [4051/03]

There are Irish Maximum Residue Levels, MRLs, for approximately 160 pesticides in-on food. These MRLs are set out in statutory instruments drawn up by my Department. I have made arrangements to forward a list of these to the Deputy.

There are no Irish MRL's for the estimated 450 plus other pesticides which are used world-wide. Under the EU pesticide re-evaluation programme, as established under Directive 91/414/EEC, all pesticides used in plant production within the EU will have to be reviewed before the end of 2008.
