Vol. 561 No. 6

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Mary Upton

Question:

97 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the problem secondary schools in disadvantaged areas have in retaining teachers; and if he will consider improvements in their career structure to encourage teachers to stay with disadvantaged schools. [5135/03]

An Agreed Programme for Government sets out a commitment to implement changes to retention and support policies which will assist schools in areas of significant disadvantage to recruit and retain teachers. I have asked officials of my Department to examine how best this commitment can be met over the next five years and to consult with the partners in education in that regard.
