Vol. 561 No. 6

Written Answers - Medical Cards.

Seán Crowe

Question:

106 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Health and Children if a medical card will be provided to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 24. [5051/03]

Under the Health Act 1970 determination of eligibility for medical cards is the responsibility of the chief executive officer of the relevant health board. Medical cards are issued to persons who, in the opinion of the chief executive officer, are unable to provide general practitioner medical and surgical services for themselves and their dependants without undue hardship. Accordingly, this case has been referred to the regional chief executive of the Eastern Regional Health Authority for investigation and direct reply to the Deputy. Any person normally resident in Ireland who is not a medical card holder may apply to their local health board for inclusion in the drugs payment scheme. This ensures that no person or family unit pays in excess of €70 per month for a range of approved prescribed drugs and medicines.
