Vol. 562 No. 1

Written Answers - Proposed Legislation.

Denis Naughten

Question:

214 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Defence the secondary legislation outstanding within his Department; the function of each piece of secondary legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5517/03]

An extensive body of secondary legislation, comprising 52 Defence Forces regulations, has been made pursuant to the provisions of the Defence Act 1954. My Department is engaged in an ongoing programme of rewriting all Defence Forces regulations to simplify and modernise them. Many of the provisions of the regulations reflect the administrative practices of an earlier time and are overly detailed. While certain matters relating to the government and management of the Defence Forces will continue to be prescribed in regulations, most will eventually be replaced in administrative instructions which will be issued by the relevant senior military authority. If the Deputy would like more specific information on any aspect of Defence Forces regulations, I will be happy to forward him detailed information on the matter.
