Vol. 562 No. 1

Written Answers - School Supervision Costs.

Michael Ring

Question:

344 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the amount it has cost in County Mayo to pay the people who are brought in for supervision and other duties in place of teachers, while the dispute has been ongoing with his Department and the teachers in secondary schools; the amount it would have cost if the teachers had been paid instead; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5590/03]

The cost of the interim arrangements agreed with the representative school management groups to keep secondary and community schools in County Mayo open arising from the ASTI directive to its members to withdraw from voluntary supervision and substitution duties is estimated, based on reconciliations returned by schools, to amount to €1.5 million. The corresponding cost of applying the supervision-substitution arrangements on the basis of the scheme agreed with the TUI and INTO is estimated to amount to €1million.
