Vol. 562 No. 1

Written Answers - Hospital Inquiry.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

393 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children the investigations which his Department has carried out into the circumstances surrounding the death of a person (details supplied) in the Mater Hospital, Dublin 7, on 14 January 2003; if, in view of the concerns of this person's family regarding her treatment received, he will initiate an inquiry into this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5537/03]

I convey my deepest sympathy to the family of the woman concerned.

As the Deputy may be aware, the deceased had been receiving treatment at a private clinic attached to the Rotunda Hospital. I am advised that, in accordance with the provisions of the Coroners Act, 1962, the death has been notified to the Dublin City Coroner. It will be for the coroner to determine whether an inquest is required into the death.

In view of the public concern about this tragedy, I have requested a report on the case from the Rotunda Hospital. It would be inappropriate for me to make any further comment until this comes to hand.
