Vol. 562 No. 1

Written Answers - Garda Investigations.

Seán Crowe

Question:

435 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the status of the Garda investigation into the death of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 24; if the gardaí believe they have enough evidence to pass on to the Director of Public Prosecutions; if the case is still open; and if so, the resources being put into it. [5507/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the person in question died in a fire on 1 September, 2001.

An extensive investigation was carried out into this death involving local gardaí with support from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Harcourt Square. A number of other initiatives were undertaken, including a reward, which was offered for information relating to the incident under the auspices of Crime Stoppers.

I understand that despite the efforts of the investigating gardaí the circumstances which led to the death of this person have not been established, and that the investigation has not produced evidence which would permit the forwarding of a file to the DPP. The case remains open and it remains a priority for the Garda Síochána. The case is kept under continuous review and any new information received is immediately investigated. I am assured that all necessary resources required for the proper investigation of this incident are available and utilised.
