Vol. 562 No. 1

Written Answers - Prisoner Transfers.

Tony Gregory

Question:

446 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, in view of the special circumstances of the prisoners, non aligned, in Portlaoise Prison, he will give further consideration to a request for a transfer to Shelton Abbey Open Prison by a person (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5625/03]

The person referred to is serving a six year sentence in Portlaoise Prison for training persons in the use of firearms and is not due for release until 19 April, 2004. I am aware of the circumstances of this case and, following representations recently made on his behalf by his legal representative, due and careful consideration was given to his request for a transfer out of Portlaoise Prison.

I am satisfied, from inquiries made, that the therapeutic services available to him in Portlaoise Prison can provide him with appropriate treatment and that his current location is the most suitable place for him.
