Vol. 562 No. 1

Written Answers - Tax Code.

Bernard Allen

Question:

148 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Finance his plans to undertake a review of the stamp duty code. [5439/03]

The stamp duty code is reviewed by my Department and by the Revenue Commissioners on an ongoing basis, particularly in the context of the budget and Finance Bill process. There are various provisions in the Finance Bill 2003 which, if enacted, will all effect changes in the stamp duty code. Also, the tax strategy group reviews the operation of all taxes, including stamp duty, on a regular basis.

Significant issues arising from these reviews are brought to my attention by my Department. I should point out that stamp duty is an important source of revenue to the Exchequer and yielded €1,167 million in 2002, which amounted to 4% of total tax revenue.
