Vol. 562 No. 1

Written Answers - Job Creation.

Seán Crowe

Question:

202 Mr. Crowe asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of jobs in IDA supported companies created in the Dublin south-west region in each year for the past five years; the number of jobs in IDA supported companies created in Dublin City and County in each of the past five years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5247/03]

Information on the number of jobs in IDA supported companies created in County Dublin over the past five years is included in the following tabular statement. The figures are obtained from the Forfás employment survey, and 2002 figures are preliminary. Data is not available below county level.

IDA's strategy for the Dublin area is to attract and expand major FDI projects, moving up the value chain while doing so. Projects which would fit into this category in the Dublin area would include Wyeth Medica in Clondalkin with over 50% graduate employment for its approved 1,300 job project and Swords Laboratories in Cruiserath with a similar profile for its 500 job project. Further high-value projects include Xilinx design and development electronics facility in Citywest, growing from 350 to 1,800 jobs over ten years, and SAP's software facility in Citywest also. In the city, Oracle, with over 350 people in East Point Business Park, is a high value salary employer.
E-business continues to be a focus area for IDA in Dublin especially among the existing client base. Microsoft has set up a European Internet data centre in Citywest and they will now be doing trial runs for electronics distribution of software and licences to their clients. IBM has added an e-procurement activity to their Mulhuddart tech campus, which represents a significant enhancement to their existing facility. Adobe has established a corporate Internet data centre in Citywest.
The IFSC, with over 450 companies employing 9,000 people, will continue to expand and create high value jobs in financial services and IT. High-end shared services projects such as Accenture, formerly Andersen Consulting, with 350 people are an example of what Dublin will attract on the FDI front in future.
