Vol. 562 No. 2

Written Answers - National Heritage Sites.

Seán Crowe

Question:

236 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on calls, including one from a person (details supplied), to designate the old section of Glasnevin Cemetery as a national heritage site. [5873/03]

Heritage sites are designated as such under the legislation administered by my Department by reference to the need for architectural or archaeological protection or ecological conservation. In addition, non-statutory designation has been made by UNESCO of a small number of Irish sites as World Heritage Sites.

Many other sites of leading historical, cultural and national importance exist throughout the country which fall outside the criteria. This is no way detracts from the respect which should be accorded to these sites or from their being revered or celebrated by Irish people in suitable ways.

Glasnevin Cemetery contains two structures which are included on the Record of Protected Structures for Dublin city, as well as a recorded monument in the form of a battlefield site. For the reasons explained, neither the overall cemetery nor the old section of it are considered to be capable of designation within the criteria mandated to my Department's administration.
