Vol. 562 No. 2

Written Answers - Tourism Industry.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

131 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism his views on whether spiralling alcohol and drug abuse here is having a negative impact on tourism; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5612/03]

Preliminary results from Bord Fáilte's visitor attitudes survey 2002 show that the Ireland holiday experience surpassed expectations for one third of visitors. This figure is in line with results recorded in similar surveys conducted over the past ten years. A further 60% reported that the holiday matched their expectations while only 4% stated that the holiday did not live up to their expectations.

Of the 1,000 holidaymakers interviewed, 93% expressed themselves as very satisfied with the friendliness and hospitality experienced while in Ireland. Almost nine in ten visitors to Ireland were very satisfied with the memorable experiences and high satisfaction levels were also cited for safety and security.

These findings do not support the contention that tourism is being impacted by perceived increases in alcohol and drug abuse on the part of Irish people.

Question No. 132 answered with Question No. 119.
