Vol. 562 No. 2

Written Answers - Psychological Service.

Jack Wall

Question:

172 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science when a person (details supplied) in County Kildare will receive a psychological assessment; the reason there has been such a delay in providing a service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5854/03]

The school attended by the person named does not yet have access to the psychological service provided by NEPS. All schools in this situation have access to private assessments through the scheme for commissioning psychological assessments. This school was entitled, under the scheme, to commission 16 assessments over the period September 2001 to June 2003 and has availed of its entitlement.

As it has not been possible to contact the school in recent days, probably because of the mid-term break, NEPS has not been able to ascertain how school management prioritised children for assessment. However, as soon as the school re-opens, NEPS will follow the matter up. It is hoped now that the school will receive a full NEPS service in the next school year, subject to the recruitment of additional psychologists to the region.
