Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - Arts Education.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

135 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether the number of places available to study music and drama on a part-time basis should be increasing to help encourage accessibility to students, especially those from disadvantaged areas, in line with the partnership agreements; if so, the way in which he proposes to facilitate this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6004/03]

Music and drama form part of the revised primary school curriculum. These subjects must therefore be delivered by all primary schools as part of the curriculum.

At second level music is one of the approved subjects on the junior certificate and leaving certificate programmes. Modules in music and drama are also available as part of the leaving certificate applied programme. The curriculum to be offered to pupils attending second level schools is a matter for the authorities of the schools concerned subject to my Department's regulations concerning provision of the core curriculum.

Question No. 136 answered with Question No. 134.
