Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - Teaching Qualifications.

Michael Noonan

Question:

138 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Limerick is eligible to teach here; if not the steps this person should take to make them eligible; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6044/03]

In 1999 the person referred to by the Deputy made application to the Registration Council for recognition of qualifications for the purpose of admission to the register for intermediate (secondary) school teachers. The application was considered in full by the council and it was found that the matters covered in education and training, as shown in the application, did not meet the requirements for registration as a secondary school teacher. The means by which the shortfall in qualifications could be made good were outlined in detail in the decision of the council.

If this person wishes to fulfil the requirements for secondary teaching through obtaining a qualification at masters level, it is essential that the matters detailed in the decision of the Registration Council are covered in the course concerned. It is advisable, therefore, that details of the course content are submitted for consideration by the Registration Council prior to any such course being undertaken.
