Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - Garda Deployment.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

202 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí who were in the Buncrana district in the Donegal division in 1993; the number in 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6025/03]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources and personnel to individual areas, that the strength of Buncrana district, all ranks, as at 24 February 2003 is 77. The personnel strength of Buncrana district, all ranks, on 23 February, 1993 was 85.

I am further advised that Garda personnel levels were maintained at a higher level in 1993 for the purpose of policing the Border area with Northern Ireland at a time when there was increased Border activity.
