Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - Garda Strength.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

204 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the need for a Garda reserve; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6027/03]

I have no plans to establish a Garda reserve. Rather my priority is to increase the strength of the force, which currently stands at approximately 11,900, to 12,200, its current authorised strength. This will represent an all time record level of strength and will, I believe, taken together with proposals I am advancing for Garda reform, increased accountability and improved investigative powers, provide for a significantly enhanced police service.
