Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - Architectural Heritage.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

212 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the full range of facilities now available to the public under phase 1 of the restoration works to Maynooth Castle, Maynooth, County Kildare; and the full range of facilities which were to be provided under the now deferred phase 2 restoration works. [6014/03]

Planning permission was received in 1998 for an overall project at Maynooth Castle which involved the re-roofing of the keep, the carrying out of works to the interior for the purposes of presenting the monument and for other associated works such a stairs, toilet, lift and entrance kiosk.

It was subsequently decided to proceed with a more limited range of works and a reduced scheme was approved in 1999 within the envelope of the planning permission. These works, which have been part funded by the EU Operational Programme for Tourism and are now completed, comprised a major programme of conservation, adaptation works to the ground floor, the provision of access to the first floor and the provision of an exhibition and reception point.

There are no proposals to carry out further works to Maynooth Castle in the medium term.
