Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - Third Level Charges.

Joan Burton

Question:

16 Ms Burton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to concerns expressed by some universities that they may need to charge student registration fees of up to ?1,400 due to the cutbacks in funding for third level institutions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5822/03]

I am not aware of any proposals by individual universities to increase the student services charge from €670 to €1,400. The allocation of resources to individual universities is made by the Higher Education Authority within the constraints of the overall funding made available to it for this purpose by my Department. The Higher Education Authority has notified institutions of their provisional allocations for 2003 in the last week and this information is now being considered by the institutions. It will be a matter for the universities to manage their resources in 2003 and where necessary to effect economies in order to keep expenditure within approved budgets.
