Vol. 562 No. 3

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

Paul McGrath

Question:

46 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason Coralstown national school, County Westmeath, was listed on his Department's website in April 2002 under the heading, primary schools projects approved to go to tender when, in fact, the project was not ready for tender; the reason the then Minister in April 2002 assured a parents' deputation that the new school would be completed and opened in September 2003; the reason this project has not yet been approved to go to tender; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5797/03]

The Deputy will appreciate that the timing of a school building project going to tender depends on factors such as the complexity and size of the project, the time required to undertake architectural planning, the volume of other projects being dealt with either by the design team and-or my Department's building unit, the period of time required for the granting of planning permission and obtaining a fire certificate, as well as the level of funding available for such projects.

A small scale project at Coralstown has been included in this year's programme and details are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. The large-scale building project at the school is at the early stages of architectural planning and will proceed to tender and construction as soon as possible having regard to the budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years.
