Vol. 562 No. 4

Written Answers - Child Abuse.

Noel Grealish

Question:

322 Mr. Grealish asked the Minister for Health and Children the reasons for the delay in completing the inquiry under the Chairperson, Dr. Elizabeth Healy, by the Western Health Board into institutional abuse; his views on whether this inquiry has sufficient staffing to fulfil its function; when the report of the inquiry will be submitted to the Western Health Board; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6196/03]

An inquiry is currently being carried out on behalf of the Western Health Board and is being chaired by Dr. Elizabeth Healy. The inquiry is in relation to the Brothers of Charity in Galway. The inquiry is ongoing and my Department has been informed that the process will take a further considerable amount of time to complete. As is the case of inquiries such as this, it is imperative that a full and in-depth examination is carried out in as sensitive a manner as possible and having regard to the interests and rights of all parties.
