Vol. 562 No. 4

Written Answers - Rail Accidents.

Denis Naughten

Question:

367 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport further to Parliamentary Question No. 776 of 29 January 2003, if he has received the report in question and the conclusions drawn from the report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6129/03]

I understand that consultants for the Dublin Port Tunnel contractors investigated the cause of the subsidence incident in December last on the Dublin-Belfast railway line at Fairview. These consultants produced an interim report setting out their views on the cause of the incident. A copy of this report was sent to Iarnród Éireann in early February for comment. I understand that discussions are ongoing between the parties involved with a view to identifying the cause of the incident.

Pending this, Iarnród Éireann continue to maintain the precautionary measures I outlined in my response to Parliamentary Question No. 776.
The railway inspectorate of my Department will continue to closely monitor developments in regard to establishing the cause of this incident.
