Vol. 562 No. 4

Written Answers - Mining Industry.

Liz McManus

Question:

173 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he has received communications from the owners of a company (details supplied) regarding the plans for the future of the mine; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6266/03]

My Department is in frequent communication with the company in question and I am kept apprised of the plans for the future of the mine. The company completed a programme of technical improvement measures late last year which have contributed to improved productivity at the mine. I have recently received an application for a State mining licence from the company for a new underground extension to its existing lease, and my Department also has on hands an application for a further extension to its current operations.

I hope for the continuation of mining on this site for many years to come. However, I am also mindful of the continuing difficult global market for base metals, particularly zinc. Against this background, it is understandable that this company's parent company is keeping its operations under ongoing review.
