Vol. 563 No. 1

Written Answers - Banking Sector.

Seán Crowe

Question:

254 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the large profits made by banking institutions in the past year; and the proposals he will make to redistribute some of this profit in the interests of both customers and the State. [7270/03]

As the Deputy is aware, there is a provision for a special contribution from the financial sector contained in the Finance Bill 2003. This provision will raise €300 million over the next three years, and this will increase the funds available to the Exchequer for public spending.

I have no plans to introduce any other measure of this nature as proposed by the Deputy.
