Vol. 563 No. 1

Written Answers - Post-Primary Education.

Denis Naughten

Question:

333 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 663 of 9 October 2002, the position regarding the retention of the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7196/03]

The case for the retention of the school in question has been ongoing for some time and has been the subject of several reviews in my Department and also by an independent facilitator. I met with representatives of the school retention committee in October last and, notwithstanding all previous reviews, I undertook to have my officials again re-examine all the issues, including the most up-to-date demographic data from census 2002, housing and planning applications data from the local authorities, pupil movement into and out of the catchment area and the capacity of the neighbouring schools.

Following this review, I arrived at the definitive conclusion that there is no basis for the retention of a second level school in the area concerned. I am satisfied that there is sufficient capacity overall in the remaining schools in the catchment area to meet the projected post-primary education needs of pupils in this area. All the relevant parties have been advised of my decision.
