Vol. 563 No. 1

Written Answers - Student Accommodation.

Seán Crowe

Question:

346 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Science if it is the policy of his Department to encourage all new third level campuses to have student accommodation as part of the design; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7275/03]

In recognition of the difficulties students can experience in obtaining accommodation and following consultation with third level colleges, the Government introduced a special tax incentive to encourage the provision of dedicated student residential accommodation in section 50 of the Finance Act 1999. The introduction of this incentive has resulted in a substantial number of additional bed spaces being provided. My Department does not provide direct financial assistance for the provision of student accommodation.
