Vol. 563 No. 1

Written Answers - School Transport.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

360 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the decision of school transport in relation to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare in view of the fact that this person's children commenced school in Sallins National School in 1988; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7398/03]

A school transport service to a national school may be established or retained where there is a sufficient number of eligible children, living in a distinct locality, offering for transport to their nearest national school. A minimum of seven eligible pupils are required to establish a service. In order to be eligible for free transport, children must live at least two miles from their nearest school and be attending that school.

The position in this case is that the family in question were not attending their nearest school and, accordingly, were given concessionary transport only on an existing service to Sallins National School. As there were no eligible pupils offering for transport to Sallins National School from the area concerned, the service had to be withdrawn. In the circumstances, a review of the case would serve no useful purpose.
