Vol. 563 No. 1

Written Answers - Road Safety.

Denis Naughten

Question:

470 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport the number of HGVs involved in road traffic accidents in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002; the number of such vehicles which were found to be defective; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7362/03]

Statistics relating to road accidents, based on information provided by the Garda Síochána, are published by the National Roads Authority in its annual report, Road Accident Facts. The most recent report, in respect of 2001, is available, along with reports relating to previous years, in the Oireachtas Library. The number of HGVs involved in road traffic accidents in 2000 and 2001 was 1,571 and 1,338, respectively. The reports do not identify the condition of vehicles involved in the accidents. Figures relating to the number of HGVs involved in road traffic accidents in 2002 have not yet been fully analysed and authenticated. They will be set out in the 2002 Road Accident Facts, which will be published by the NRA.
