Michael Noonan

Question:

512 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when closed circuit television cameras will be installed in Limerick city; the street which will be covered by such cameras; the dates on which the scheme will go to tender; the estimated date of implementation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7306/03]

Limerick is one of 17 locations set to receive new Garda CCTV systems over the next two years – subject to the availability of funds. The other locations are Athlone, Ballyfermot, Bray, Carlow, Castlebar, Clondalkin, Clonmel, Dundalk, Dún Laoghaire, Ennis, Finglas, Galway, Kilkenny, Sligo, Tallaght and Waterford. I have been advised by the Garda authorities that the contract for the supply and installation of a CCTV system for Limerick city was awarded in 2002 and that the installation of the system is currently under way. The system will comprise 23 cameras at the following locations throughout the city and will be monitored from Henry Street Garda station.

The five CCTV cameras that are currently located in a community scheme at Moyross and a single camera in a similar scheme at Roxborough will also be video-linked to Henry Street Garda station for monitoring purposes. This will give a total of 29 cameras in all that will be monitored at the station.
The Office of Public Works has recently completed the necessary refurbishment works to accommodate the monitoring equipment in Henry Street Garda station. Installation of the system is being progressed by the contractor who is at present completing the fitting out of the monitoring room at the station and the installation of cabling and ducting works. It is expected that the installation of cameras will commence following the granting of the required wayleaves and the completion of the planning process with Limerick City Council.
