Vol. 563 No. 1

Written Answers - Local Authority Housing.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

539 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of shared ownership loans which have been approved to Kildare County Council but which have not been drawn down; if he will authorise the allocation of private sites to those whose loans are insufficient to purchase a house on the open market; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7229/03]

An overview of activity by local authorities under the shared ownership scheme is published in my Department's housing statistics bulletins which are available in the Oireachtas Library. While expenditure by local authorities on the scheme is subject to an annual capital allocation notified by my Department, individual loans would not be subject to my Department's approval or monitoring; detailed information in relation to them would not be available in my Department.

Local authorities may provide housing sites at low cost to assist persons in housing need to provide their own housing, including persons taking shared ownership through a voluntary body or local authority, or through a group housing project sponsored by a housing co-operative.
