Vol. 563 No. 1

Written Answers - Traffic Regulations.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

160 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Transport the regulations regarding the use of bus lanes by ministerial cars; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7134/03]

The Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations of 1997 and 1998 establish the statutory basis, including relevant restrictions and prohibitions, for the use of bus lanes. The regulations also provide that many of the restrictions and prohibitions which are established in respect of the rules relating to traffic and parking generally are not applied to particular classes of road users in very particular and restricted circumstances. These include a provision through which the restrictions and prohibitions applicable to the use of bus lanes do not apply to a vehicle being used by a member of the Garda Síochána in the performance of the duties of that member. In certain circumstances the duties of members of the Garda may include the driving of vehicles for the purpose of transporting Ministers and other State appointees.
