Bunaíodh an beartas atá ann faoi tathair, ag baint le comharthaí tráchta i dtaca le áiteanna i gleantair Gaeltachtaí 1970. Socraíodh leis na Rialacháin gur i nGaeilge amháin is cóir ainmneacha áiteanna a thaispeaint i gleantair Ghaeltachta.
The general policy in relation to the use of Irish and English text is set out in the traffic signs manual, which was published in 1996. A copy of the manual is available in the Oireachtas Library. In addition to a restatement of the requirements in relation to the signage of places in Gaeltacht areas, the manual provides that the text on all other traffic information signs and on warning signs must be in Irish and English except where there is a danger, in the case of some roadworks and warning signs, that the impact of the message would be affected by the amount of text. In such circumstances separate Irish and English signs should be used.
As the general policy in relation to traffic information signage was reviewed as recently as 1996, I do not envisage changes to the current policy at this time.
