Vol. 563 No. 1

Written Answers - Departmental Appointments.

Denis Naughten

Question:

205 Mr. Naughten asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the names of persons from County Roscommon who are currently on State boards under the authority of her Department; the date of their appointment; the duration of their term; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6922/03]

The constitution of State boards is governed by statute and I am obliged to make many appointments based on the nominations which I receive from the various nominating bodies. Nominations are based on an individual's expertise and experience in a particular area. I have made a number of appointments since coming to office, but I have not appointed any person solely on the basis of their geographic location.

Since board members frequently use business addresses, I am not in any event in a position to state whether they come from County Roscommon in the time available.

Since board members frequently use business addresses, I am not in a position to state whether appointees are from my constituency in the time available.

I can say that constitution of the board of FÁS is governed by the Labour Services Act 1987. Of the 17 members on the board of FÁS, only two are nominated by myself as Minister. Neither of my nominations are from my constituency. The Deputy may like to know that two FÁS board members are from my constituency, namely Mr. William Attley, trade union representative, and Mr. Peter Cullen, Worker Director. Neither of these nominations, however, are within my remit.

The Labour Services Act 1987 also allows for the establishment of FÁS International Consulting Limited. There are seven members on the board of FÁS International. Of these, I have nominated and appointed Ms Tara Hayes from my constituency.
