Vol. 563 No. 2

Written Answers - Proposed Legislation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

241 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the extent to which he intends to reform the law to combat increased crime rates; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7576/03]

My proposals to amend the criminal law are set out in the Government legislation programme. A Criminal Justice (Garda Powers) Bill will be introduced giving additional powers to the Garda Síochána in investigating serious crime. The new public order legislation going through the Oireachtas will greatly enhance the power of the Garda Síochána to deal with public order offences. If a need is identified at any stage to amend the law to deal with a specific crime problem, I will not hesitate to bring forward proposals for such legislation.
