Vol. 563 No. 4

Written Answers - Special Educational Needs.

Willie Penrose

Question:

287 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science, further to Parliamentary Question No. 273 of 4 March 2003, if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the recommended resource teaching time required for the person (details supplied) is ten hours; if the basic minimum requirements will be provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7785/03]

The child in question has been allocated five hours per week of resource teaching support, which is the maximum allocation for the special needs of the child in question as outlined in my Department's Circular 08/02 concerning resource teaching. My officials are currently considering an inspector's report regarding any further educational needs the pupil might have and my Department will be in contact with the pupil's parents in this regard shortly.

Seán Haughey

Question:

288 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give the go ahead for a second level class for adolescents with Asperger's syndrome as raised by the Aspire group; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7791/03]

The issue raised by the Deputy is currently being examined by my Department. My Department will be in touch with Aspire in relation to this matter shortly.
