Vol. 563 No. 4

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

299 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science if, as indicated in a letter from his Department dated 13 June 2002, provision was made to include Gaelscoil Charman, County Wexford, in the 2002 building programme; if so, the area to which the money intended for this purpose was subsequently allocated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7824/03]

The 2002 and 2003 capital programmes were published on my Department's website and details of this year's programme is at www.education.ie.

These programmes detail many projects, including Gaelscoil Charman, which are currently at architectural design, ready to proceed to construction and those which are at construction. Provision was made in 2002 for this particular project to complete tender documentation stage. While every effort is made to progress as many projects as possible to construction, the reality is that the level of funding available, having regard to contractual financial commitments to be met and the rate of expenditure on projects already in construction, determines the number of new projects that can be authorised to proceed to tender and construction at any given time. The budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years will determine the rate of progress on projects that could not be included in this year's programme.
