Vol. 563 No. 4

Written Answers - Garda Operations.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

529 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the plans by the Garda Commissioner to set up a national missing persons bureau with similar resources to those in other jurisdictions; and if not, if the Commissioner will consider such. [7608/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda missing persons bureau, which is attached to Garda headquarters, is responsible for data relating to missing persons. In a case of a missing person, the local Garda district officer takes direct responsibility for the investigation and will appoint an investigation team to include any specialised unit deemed necessary, such as, for example, the national bureau of criminal investigation or the technical bureau. The services of other agencies such as Interpol and Europol are also available to assist in the investigation. The Garda authorities have informed me that they are satisfied that every effort is made to locate all missing persons and that the current procedures for dealing with missing persons are adequate.

Tony Gregory

Question:

530 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will request a report from the Garda authorities detailing the action they have taken regarding the spate of house break-ins, vandalism to cars and other anti-social behaviour in the Glengarriff Parade district, Dublin 7, which is adjacent to Mountjoy Garda Station; if two community gardaí will be available to patrol the area, especially between the hours of 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. while these problems persist; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7610/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a number of criminal damage and public order incidents have been reported in the area surrounding Glengarriff Parade. Local Garda management have re-directed resources on night duty, including community Garda, a detective unit and mobile patrols, to pay specific attention to the area in question in order to prevent further such incidents.
