Vol. 563 No. 4

Written Answers - Work Permits.

Finian McGrath

Question:

566 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on whether using Garda resources as part of a crackdown on immigrants working without proper permits is sensible policing in view of the fact that one restaurant lost two thirds of its staff and many parts of the country are looking for more effective community policing. [8088/03]

The Garda Síochána has responsibility for the enforcement of immigration law in this State and it is a matter for it to determine what initiatives are necessary to ensure compliance with that law. The need for immigrant labour cannot simply override the State's obligation to effectively regulate the migration of non-nationals to the State. It is in the interests of both the State and migrant workers alike to ensure that such migration is carried out in a structured and legally sound manner. Although enforcement is only one feature of policy in relation to immigration, it is an important element not only in terms of ensuring the integrity and authority of the State but also to ensure fair treatment of migrant workers. I am sure the Deputy will recognise that without enforcement of regulations governing employment in Ireland we risk exposing non-nationals to dangerous exploitation.
