Vol. 563 No. 4

Written Answers - Illegal Immigrants.

John Deasy

Question:

571 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the possibility of large scale seaboard landings in the south coast by illegal immigrants from north and west Africa; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8190/03]

There is a range of circumstances in which the State might be faced with an unexpected once-off influx of illegal immigrants. There are even differing sets of circumstances in which the specific situation outlined by the Deputy might arise. Our general approach to an occurrence of this nature would be informed by international and domestic law, by humanitarian considerations and by the need to preserve the integrity of our immigration system.

The Garda National Immigration Bureau has over the past two years developed an effective intelligence base in relation to illegal immigration in consultation with their colleagues in other jurisdictions. In addition, there is excellent ongoing co-operation between Departments in matters of this nature. Consequently, I am satisfied that in the event of an occurrence of the type described by the Deputy, appropriate measures would be taken, having regard to all of the prevailing circumstances.
