Vol. 563 No. 5

Written Answers - Garda Stations.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

213 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the very poor condition of Finglas Garda station, Dublin 11; the position at which Finglas stands in the order of priority for new Garda stations; and when a replacement station is likely to be built given the totally inadequate conditions there for both the public and gardaí working there. [8499/03]

I am aware of the unsatisfactory accommodation facilities at Finglas Garda station.

The station is in the Garda building programme and it is the intention to build a new station there that will provide the gardaí with the facilities they require to provide an effective and efficient policing service to the local area. As a first necessary step, the Office of Public Works has been asked to source a suitable site and, once that has been achieved, the question of the construction of the new station will be addressed.

Although it is not possible to say at this point when the project will commence, I assure the Deputy that the matter will be progressed as quickly as overall priorities within the Garda building programme and the availability of financial and other resources allow.

In the meantime, the Office of Public Works and the Garda authorities are carrying out improvements within the existing station, such as electrical work to the lighting in the station, the installation of a new automatic fire alarm and emergency lighting system, and making better use of the facilities available with a view to improving matters for the members serving there and the public alike.
