Vol. 563 No. 5

Written Answers - Criminal Prosecutions.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

215 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the Garda stations in the Dublin metropolitan area where Garda evidence can be given to a court by certificate; the reason for the delay in extending this facility to all stations given the staffing shortages in many areas; and if he will give this matter his urgent attention. [8501/03]

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution can be given by a member of the Garda Síochána to a court by way of a certificate in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1997.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda stations which provide evidence on the above basis in the Dublin metropolitan region are as follows:

Bridewell Courts

Store Street, Bridewell, Pearse Street, Crumlin and Sundrive Road stations.

Kilmainham Court

Kilmainham, Kevin Street, Ballyfermot, Lucan, Clondalkin, Rathcoole, Leixlip and Ronanstown stations.

Tallaght Court

Tallaght and Rathfarnham stations.

Bray-Dún Laoghaire Court

Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, Kill o' the Grange, Cabinteely, Shankill, Bray, Greystones, Enniskerry, Blackrock, Dundrum and Stepaside stations.

Swords Court

Coolock Station and the DMR divisional task force (bail prisoners only).

A proposal for the extension of this facility to all stations in the DMR is the subject of ongoing discussions between the Garda authorities and my Department.
