Vol. 563 No. 5

Adjournment Debate Matters.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Keaveney – the reasons behind the increase of diesel prices to match petrol prices in some regions of the country; (2) Deputy Fleming – the need for the Minister for Agriculture and Food to put in place as a matter of urgency arrangements to provide health certification for export lamb skins to Turkey; to consult with his colleagues in Northern Ireland, the UK and other EU countries, if appropriate, to see what arrangements they have put in place to deal with this issue arising from changes by the Turkish authorities and to replicate these arrangements in Ireland as the employment in and the viability of Maganey Industries Limited and others will be irreparably damaged unless this matter is dealt with over the coming days; (3) Deputy Lynch – the safety management systems in Irish hotels following the death of a worker in a Limerick hotel last year; (4) Deputy Donal Moynihan – the need to discuss the hardship caused to pupils and staff of St. Colman's boys national school, Macroom, County Cork, roll No. 15597W, and St. Joseph's primary school, Macroom, County Cork, roll No. 10047I, due to the decision of the Department to terminate posts allocated under the Giving Children an Even Break scheme; the applications made by these two schools under this disadvantaged programme; to outline the process of appeal; to ascertain if the up-to-date information supplied by these two schools was reviewed by the ERC; to provide details of the scoring system used, the method of calculation of the points for inclusion and the cut-off points for inclusion in the scheme; (5) Deputies Healy and Hayes – the need for the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to establish a task force for Tipperary Town to address the serious unemployment levels in the town which have been compounded by the loss of 150 jobs at Pall (Ireland) Limited; (6) Deputy Burton – to ask the Minister for Education and Science to make a statement on the building of a permanent school at Littlepace, Castaheany, Dublin 15 – Mary, Mother of Hope, national school – in view of the many thousands of families already living in the catchment area and the many additional thousands of homes to be built there, and given that the school and parents in the area will face serious crises unless a permanent school is built in 2004; (7) Deputy Deenihan – the threatened downgrading of Tralee General Hospital as outlined in the leaked task force report on medical staffing; (8) Deputy Gogarty – the need to deal with the backlog in processing applications for overseas adoptions in the Dublin area by redistributing the workload to other health boards; (9) Deputy O'Dowd – to ask the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources to discuss the proposals for broadband in County Louth, with particular reference to the towns of Drogheda, Dundalk and Ardee; and (10) Deputy Neville – the need for an independent investigation into the death by suicide of a 21 year old student at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital on 20 September 2002.

The matters raised by Deputies Lynch, Keaveney, Gogarty and Neville have been selected for discussion and will be taken at the conclusion of business.
